Part of living simply is being very picky about what products you buy. Most of us who choose this lifestyle can't afford to live a consumers lifestyle, nor do we want to. It is very important to find items that will work long term and not have to be replaced every year. Spending a little more in the beginning can save you some big bucks over the years. You will notice a lot of the items we use are stainless steel, the less plastic moving parts the better. Hard to find these days, but we did the best we could given the choices available. One of my favorite things on a cozy off grid night is to make some popcorn. Sure microwave is easier but have you read about all the crap that is put into them? So get some non GMO popcorn put it in this baby and crank away. I recommend putting a few kernels in first and let the oil/butter get hot enough to pop those, then put the rest in. I love to top mine with olive oil and nutritional yeast!

Ok, we are not kidding anybody here, this is in no shape or form as easy as a regular blender. But ya know what? It actually works! A great alternative for off-gridders with smaller solar arrays, or to take on camping trips.

I thought I would include this one also. Our popper had a clear lid like this one and it made it so much easier to see how it was going.

A good compost pail makes life a lot easier! My only complaint with this one is that I would have liked a bigger one! It works great though and the stainless steel is a big plus.

There are many hand crack coffee grinders to choose from, this is the one we used. Whenever possible we chose a solid stainless steel construction for longevity. We were very happy with this grinder. The opening has to be adjusted as it starts in the very fine position.

Don't forget these to go with your coffee grinder! These are great! The one we bought lasted 10 years. Easy to clean, just rinse out.

We actually used this coffee pot as a tea pot. We put loose green leaves into the filter basket. We had the 14 cup model and it had a stainless steel handle. This seems to have a silicone one. The stainless one did get hot so it may be an improvement. I do see the larger 36 cup models seem to have the steel handles still.

This is not the coffee pot we used but it is close. I chose this one because it has the handle that folds to the side. We used our pot along with our coffee filter, rested it in the top opening and poured hot water thru it. It was our coffee machine. We boiled water in a separate kettle. We thought it provided a better taste than using a percolator.

A good stainless pressure cooker pays off big time. If saves on propane, wood or electricity costs by cutting down the cooking time. I have a great recipe for Indian Dal that we made all the time in one of these!

I LOVE WAFFLES. I rarely have them, but I love them. I don't usually recommend the nonstick variety. We had a cast iron one and darned if I could ever make them without them sticking all to heck. If you can work the cast iron ones thats great get one of those! For those who can't I think this is a great nonstick alternative. Its on my wishlist.

A Good cast iron griddle is another must have. We had an antique one that we used that was this size. It worked great on our wood cook stove. This one looks really good its even reversible!

Love the cast iron! We had stainless and cast but I always loved the feel of cooking with the cast, plus you get a bit more iron in your food!
